Data Migrations

Valuable Data Only Please

Data migration to the Cloud must be done systematically, otherwise, the cost of Actionable Intelligence Lifecycle moving and storing dark data (data that has no operational value) to the Cloud is expensive with no return on the investment. It should be a mandate to only migrate operational data and remove the redundant, outdated or trivial information such as duplicate and near duplicate files and systems files such as temp, log, and installation filesappropriately called "ROT." A Gartner reports states that 30% of data stored is indeed ROT with another 50% being of indeterminate value.1 That only leaves 20% that's deemed mission critical. The potential for significant savings is real by removing ROT and only migrating operational data. And the savings is measured in millions of dollars for enterprises having a petabyte (PB) of data or more across data stores. In the same report, Gartner determined that it costs ~$30M per PB to keep this ROT around.2 Just eliminating ROT for enterprises that have 1-10 PB of data would yield $0.9M to $9M in savings.

Cloud MigrationEnterprises Can Revolutionize Their Understanding of Their Data

Gartner also noted that if 50% of the data with indeterminate value turned out to be ROT, the savings would "skyrocket."3 In our example that would increase the savings range to $16.5M at the high end. AI Foundry's solutions identify ROT, so that it can be eliminated. Removing trivial data provides non-trivial savings.

Minimize Risk, Reduce Liability, Ensure Compliance

Finding and cleaning out PII, PHI and PCI before a Cloud migration can be challenging, especially if the data sources are scattered across the enterprise. Our data repository crawler digs through file shares, ECM repositories and even SharePoint and Google Drives to identify documents that contain this sensitive information. This enables organizations to find and act on these documents to protect, delete, or redact them—minimizing risk, reducing liability and ensuring the organization is in compliance.

Let Our Solutions Help

  • AI Foundry’s Cloud Migration solution will analyze your enterprise dataset and give you valuable insight into what it contains by crawling the organizations storage sets including SharePoint, Google Drive, and networked file shares, and report on various statistics about that data. It handles over 600 different file types, including images, text files, and a variety of document types. This can be done on an organization’s historical data or its current data.
  • After analysis is complete, our solution will classify then group documents according to large pre-defined categories so that IT can determine the next course of action.
  • Customers can choose to either utilize our solution independently or work with the AI Foundry team to project manage the analysis and execution.
  • We will work with the enterprise to determine in detail the following components as part of our Cloud Migration solution:
    • Cloud space required
    • Time to migrate
    • Post risk profile
    • File retention profile
  • As part of the migration process, a workflow can be defined by a business analyst and initiated to enable a business process for certain categories of documents and even create a workflow to store them in an ECM environment.
  • Since the file analysis is an iterative process, all documents will be analyzed, classified and put into document categories as part of an ongoing identification and classification process.

was a significant benefit of adopting a cloud platform and that it would unlock powerful new capabilities for their organization.

Top Eight Questions to Consider When Considering A Cloud Migration

  1. What file types are to be migrated?
  2. What are the highest priority data sources to migrate?
  3. How is the organization going to identify/redact PII, PHI, PCI?
  4. What is the migration project timeline?
  5. Is there a plan to migrate to an intermediary storage solution?
  6. What percentage of data is really necessary to migrate?
  7. What are the target systems?
  8. Is data age a factor in what is migrated?
